    Why Regulate Guns?Reva B. Siegel & Joseph Blocher - 2020 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 48 (S4):11-16.
Courts reviewing gun laws that burden Second Amendment rights ask how effectively the laws serve public safety — yet typically discuss public safety narrowly, without considering the many dimensions of that interest gun laws serve. “Public safety” is a social good: it includes the public's interest in physical safety as a good in itself, and as a foundation for community and for the exercise of constitutional liberties. Gun laws protect bodies from bullets — and Americans' freedom and confidence to participate (...)

Uncertain science...: uncertain world.Henry N. Pollack - 2003 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
Scientific uncertainty puzzles many people. The puzzlement arises when scientists have more than one answer, and disagree among themselves. This book helps people find their way through this maze of scientific contradiction and uncertainty. By acquainting them with the ways that uncertainty arises in science, how scientists accommodate and make use of uncertainty, and how they reach conclusions in the face of uncertainty, the book enables readers to confidently evaluate uncertainty from their own perspectives, in terms of their own experiences.

Why the NHS should abandon the search for the universal outcome measure.Reva Berman Brown, Sean McCartney & Louise Bell - 1995 - Health Care Analysis 3 (3):191-195.
This paper considers the use of outcome measures in the British National Health Service (NHS). Measuring outcomes is a major conceptual and practical problem. Many different measures are currently available yet no consensus has been reached on which should be preferred over others, or about which should take priority when they conflict. Some currently used measures are described, the relationship between these measures and the measured activities are discussed, and fundamental problems with both the measures and their use are revealed. Dignity and the Duty to Protect Unborn Life.Reva Siegel - 2013 - Proceedings of the British Academy 192:513-527.
This chapter analyses competing claims on dignity in constitutional judgments about abortion that impose on government a constitutional duty to protect unborn life. Over decades of debate, courts deciding abortion cases have adopted different approaches to reconciling commitments to dignity as liberty, dignity as equality, and dignity as life. Courts vary over time and across borders in the ways they require respect for dignity in the regulation of abortion, as the essay shows by comparing leading German abortion judgments and cases (...)

Developing more useful equity measurements for flood-risk management.Adam Pollack, Casey Helgeson, Carolyn Kousky & Klaus Keller - forthcoming - Nature Sustainability.
Decision-makers increasingly invoke equity to motivate, design, implement, and evaluate strategies for managing flood risks. But there is no objective definition of equity. This pluralistic setting calls for transparency about underlying values, but this practice is uncommon. Here, we review how equity is measured by surveying peer-reviewed publications that explicitly state an interest in equity in the context of flood-risk management. We develop a simple taxonomy for how transparent measurements can be defined. We map reviewed measurements to this taxonomy. Finally, (...)

Peer-reviewed climate change research has a transparency problem. The scientific community needs to do better.Adam Pollack, Jentry E. Campbell, Madison Condon, Courtney Cooper, Matteo Coronese, James Doss-Gollin, Prabhat Hegde, Casey Helgeson, Jan Kwakkel, Corey Lesk, Justin Mankin, Erin Mayfield, Samantha Roth, Vivek Srikrishnan, Nancy Tuana & Klaus Keller - manuscript
Mission-oriented climate change research is often unverifiable. Therefore, many stakeholders look to peer-reviewed climate change research for trustworthy information about deeply uncertain and impactful phenomena. This is because peer-review signals that research has been vetted for scientific standards like reproducibility and replicability. Here we evaluate the transparency of research methodologies in mission-oriented computational climate research. We find that only five percent of our sample meets the minimal standard of fully open data and code required for reproducibility and replicability. The widespread (...)

    Orality as an Element of Historicо-Philosophical Research.Nataliia Reva - 2024 - Sententiae 43 (1):29-43.
In the current research, using methods of oral history of philosophy, oral communication (in particular, interviews) is considered only as a technical phase in preparing the final text. The author claims that the primary audio or video recordings of such an interview, an "oral draft," should be considered independent material. After all, the written text does not reflect the interlocutors' intonations; comparing the source material and the final text may become important for future researchers. After the transcribed and agreed text (...)

Когнітивізація логіки або чому саме сьогодні логіка потребує підтримки когнітивістики: історико-методологічний аналіз.Nataliia Reva - 2020 - Multiversum. Philosophical Almanac 2 (1):171-186.

The Analogy in Decision-Making and the Implicit Association Bias Effect.Nataliia Reva - 2019 - Studia Humana 8 (2):25-31.
The author stands that thinking by analogy is a natural instrument human have because of the mirror neurons in our brain. However, is it that infallible to rely on? How can we be sure that our hidden biases will not harm our reflections? Implicit Association Bias (IAB), for instance, is a powerful intruder that affects our understanding, actions, and decisions on the unconscious level by cherishing the stereotypes based on specific characteristics such as ethnicity, sex, race, and so on. To (...)

Helping Clinicians Find Resolution after a Medical Error.Craig Pollack, Carol Bayley, Michael Mendiola & Stephen Mcphee - 2003 - Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics 12 (2):203-207.
Clinicians, operating within complex systems, make mistakes, as people do in every human endeavor, and when they do, patients are sometimes harmed. One important question is how we as clinicians can find resolution in the wake of an error. The published literature has divided errors into those caused by “systems” and by “individuals.” But whereas both “systems” and “individual” approaches are important in understanding the cause of an error, neither alone can fully lead to resolution once an error has occurred. (...)

The Faith of Biology and the Biology of Faith: Order, Meaning, and Free Will in Modern Medical Science.Robert E. Pollack - 2000 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
Are there parallels between the "moment of insight" in science and the emergence of the "unknowable" in religious faith? Where does scientific insight come from? Award-winning biologist Robert Pollack argues that an alliance between religious faith and science is not necessarily an argument in favor of irrationality: the two can inform each other's visions of the world. Pollack begins by reflecting on the large questions of meaning and purpose--and the difficulty of finding either in the orderly world described (...)

The missing moment: how the unconscious shapes modern science.Robert Pollack - 1999 - Boston: Houghton Mifflin.
In THE MISSING MOMENT a distinguished molecular biologist explores the nature of time and argues for a radical rethinking of how time affects our sense of self, our mortality, and the future of science and medicine. Only in the past few years have we learned enough about the brain for this remarkable book to be written. We know now that our brains continually filter the present through memories and emotions of the past. In fact, strictly speaking, we live in the (...)

Evaluating new options in the context of existing plans.John F. Horty & Martha E. Pollack - unknown - Artificial Intelligence 127 (2):199-220.
This paper contributes to the foundations of a theory of rational choice for artificial agents in dynamic environments. Our work is developed within a theoretical framework, originally due to Bratman, that models resource-bounded agents as operating against the background of some current set of intentions, which helps to frame their subsequent reasoning. In contrast to the standard theory of rational choice, where options are evaluated in isolation, we therefore provide an analysis of situations in which the options presented to an (...)

It would seem, on the surface, logical that entrepreneurs would treat stakeholders with honesty and respect. However, this is not always the case—at times, entrepreneurs lie to stakeholders in order to take a step closer to achieving legitimacy. It is these legitimacy lies that are the focus of the current work. Overall, while we know that legitimacy lies are told, we know very little about the psychological processes at work that may make it more likely for someone to tell a (...)
